I choose this topic today because more than being interesting its “critical” in the current times of pandemic and remote working.
Some of us are lucky to have the kind of job that encapsulates our passions, life purpose and skill set allowing us to exercise them simultaneously in the 9-5 jobs, while others are fortunate to have a professional career where our passions may not be infused within our work, but where we can utilize our technical skills and expand our knowledge. I happen to fall in the latter camp.
In the journey of advancing in this fast-paced professional life, we tend to miss out on the real passions we cherish, hence I made it a point to make time for my personal passions which now over time have become habits.
What makes your heart flutter when you finish your workday?
What gets you excited when you face a weekend with no agenda in hand?
How can you make time for those activities after you’ve wrapped for the day?
These are my pointers to help you find your passion, reignite them and keeping it burning alongside your 9-to-5 rigor.
Think on It
Reflect on the three things that have been part of your essence, your being, your truth since you were a kid. If you no longer partake in the activities or hobbies you’ve enjoyed since childhood, why have you stopped?
Be True to Yourself
Sometimes we do certain things because we think they’re trendy or because our friends are doing them. Ignore all that noise, and instead listen to your inner voice on what you think you should really be doing.
Consider a To-Do List
A to-do list is effective for making sure you make time for your passions. There’s conflicting opinion about this but I am never without a notebook to jot ideas (and dreams) down!
Make Your Passion Work for You
Once you re-discover your passions and realize how critical they are to your self-actualization and happiness, you will find yourself reprioritizing your schedule to accommodate your passions.
Give it Time
Passionate pursuits take time to hone and develop, especially if we’ve allowed them to sit on the back burner while we’ve been tending to other, more practical things. Don’t beat yourself up for this; instead, focus on pursuing the passion that is truly yours. If you listen for it, it will speak; and if you nurture that passion, it will grow.
